Interim Agriculture Minister, Jainen Kumar has confirmed that he will not give the green light to release bugs imported by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community to control the weed, mile-a-minute in the country.
Kumar said unlike other Pacific countries mile-a-minute is not a big problem for farmers in Fiji and it is also used as traditional medicine.
SPC is awaiting a response from the Interim Government before the insects are released in Fiji.
SPC officials say relevant tests have been carried out at the Koronivia Research Station and results have proved that this bug will not attack any useful plants.
