No exceptions for companies under new decree
This is the sentiment of the Director for NEC Viliame Baledrokadroka after queries were raised as many companies have been cost cutting and the recent increase in cost of doing business has forced companies to cut back on expenses.
However, Baledrokadroka said the Decree clearly states that companies will have to comply.
Meanwhile, Fiji Employers Federation General Secretary Nesbitt Hazelman had earlier told Fijivillage that there needs to be an element of growth in the economy for the NEC to be successful.
Hazelman said that while many of the attachees will gain skills, the companies are raising questions about workman compensation as well as OHS issues.
Under the National Employment Centre Decree, the companies will have to take on attachees on a ratio of five percent of their total workforce and pay them $30 a week.
The NEC training has started in Labasa with over 600 unemployed people above the age of 15 years undergoing close to eight weeks of life skill training and aptitude tests before their attachments.
