Spend the long weekend in a police cell if you are found to be driving under the influence.

That is the stern message from the Fiji Police Force with the long weekend kick starting today.

Assistant police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said motorists need to realize that there is still a no drop policy on drunk driving and people caught drunk driving today will have to spend their Easter weekend in police custody until they appear in court on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Director Traffic Mahesh Mishra said police will be out this long weekend to try and ensure the safety of all road users.

Mishra said they will be clamping down on those driving under the influence of alcohol, dangerous driving and speeding, the three main causes of road accidents today.

Mishra said drivers and pedestrians should take responsibility and ensure the safety of the people around them as well as themselves.
