While it is fortunate that freedom of religion is vibrant and strong throughout the Pacific, it is unfortunate that democracy is yet to be realized in Fiji.

These are the words of US Ambassador Steve McGann at the Fiji Muslim League's National Celebration of Prophet Mohammed's Birthday at the Lautoka Muslim Primary School this morning.

McGann speaking on democracy and the freedom of religion said democratic Governments with constitutionally protected religious freedom creates societies where people can live and worship without intimidation.

On electoral changes the Interim Government is wanting to bring about, McGann said the US government does not object to these efforts rather how it is carried out, adding changes should be made through inclusive, transparent discussions and constitutional processes that incorporate the views and aspirations of all Fijians.

The US Ambassador said the US Government agrees with the Pacific Island Leaders Forum that two years of rule by an unelected military government is not the way forward.

McGann called on all the Fijians to work together to ensure a rapid return to democracy.
