While a criteria has been set for the transport assistance for students, no such criteria has been set by Government on their plans to provide free textbooks.
Education Minister Filipe Bole said as distribution of free textbooks continue in the Eastern Division, their main focus at this stage is to ensure primary students in rural areas get their textbooks before the school year starts.
Bole added they will relook at the matter of assistance once distribution starts for schools in the urban areas.
Meanwhile Bole said Cabinet has decided that the main eligibility criterion for transport assistance is that of the total combine income of families and only students from families whose total household income is $15,000 or less will be eligible for this transport assistance.
Bole said however special consideration will be given to those families above the $15,000 threshold, provided good reasons are given for the hardship they face. He added application will have to be assessed by the Department of Social Welfare for the consideration of the Permanent Secretary for Education.
