Work on setting new criteria for members of the Great Council of Chiefs and changes to the GCC is now progressing with a cabinet sub-committee headed by the Interim Fijian Affairs Minister to present the final report next month.
Interim Minister Ratu Epeli Ganilau said the cabinet sub-committee will now work on the recommendations from the GCC Review Task Team and the draft regulation before going back to cabinet on November 20th.
Although no timeframe has been set on when the next GCC meeting will be held, Ratu Epeli said the issue is being handled in the proper manner.
When questioned on whether there will be a stand-down period for chiefs who have been involved in politics and want to be part of the GCC, Ratu Epeli confirms that this issue will be discussed. He said they have to take a stand on whether chiefs who are politicians should be members of the august body.
