Police Commissioner Commodore Esala Teleni said while the return of soldiers at checkpoints around the country to help reduce the crime rate is an option for them, it will not be used at this stage.
Speaking to Village News this afternoon, Teleni confirms that he has briefed Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama on the crime situation in the country and they are now assessing all operations before they meet to map out new strategies.
Teleni said while there are people calling for the return of soldiers on the streets, he believes police have the situation under control at this stage.
Commodore Bainimarama has raised concerns over the perceived rise in crime following the removal of soldiers from the checkpoints.
Bainimarama said he is particularly concerned about home invasions, robberies with violence, attacks on taxi drivers and desecration of Hindu temples and they have received numerous requests for the return of the soldiers at the checkpoints.
Bainimarama and Teleni meet again next week to determine where police operations can be enhanced to eradicate such crimes in the country.
