Richie McCaw's foot injury has flared up again, ruling him out of the Crusaders' Super Rugby clash with the Highlanders in Nelson on Saturday night.

McCaw, who played 29 minutes from the bench against the Chiefs last weekend, remains troubled with a bruised foot.

McCaw trained on Monday and suffered soreness in his right foot overnight.

It is the same foot in which a screw was inserted following his stress fracture pre season, but scans have ruled out any new bone damage.

The Crusaders have opted for a cautious approach with the All Blacks skipper.

The Crusaders take on the Highlanders on Saturday at 7.35pm.
