Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has stressed that the international community has no reason to be alarmed or overreact to the views of the National Council for Building a Better Fiji with regards to changes to the electoral systems.

In a statement this afternoon, Commodore Bainimarama said that Fiji as a sovereign state would not be influenced by the international community on what they consider of benefit to Fiji and its people.

Commodore Bainimarama said if through the process of dialogue and consultation, the people are asking for reforms to the electoral system, it is the profound duty of the interim government, in line with the mandate of the President to be responsive and react positively to such calls.

He said with regards to issues of credibility, inclusiveness and legitimacy of the NCBBF and the People's Charter process, everything is being done in an open and transparent manner.

The Interim Prime Minister said the international community should engage freely and genuinely with the Interim Government if they are to be of any help in fulfilling the commitments for holding free, fair and truly democratic elections as early as possible in 2009.
