No Permit for Union Public Rallies
The Police Commissioner Captain Esala Teleni confirmed to Village News that the police have decided not to issue the permit to hold rallies after carrying out their assessment.
Teleni stresses that any rallies held by the unions without the permit will be illegal and will not be tolerated. He said those who initiate the public gathering will be held accountable.
However, the Police Commissioner said the unions are permitted to continue with their industrial action and they will not interfere in the national strike.
When contacted last night, Fiji Public Service Association Industrial Advisor Nirbhay Singh said they will await an official response from the police and the Commissioner Central, Western and Eastern before making a comment later this morning.
However, Confederation of Public Sector Unions Chairman Rajeshwar Singh said yesterday that they are now contemplating whether to go ahead with their rally starting in Suva on Wednesday if the permits were not issued.
