The Human Rights Commission said there is no such clause or section in the Constitution or the Fiji Human Rights Act that restricts institutions from organizing events for one ethnic group only.
Commission Director Dr Shaista Shameem was referring to the Miss India Fiji 2009 contest, which has a requirement that only Indo-Fijians can take part in the competition.
According to Shameem this is an international event and nothing much can be done to force wider participation.
Meanwhile, Miss India Fiji 2009 Main Organizer Ranjit Singh said there is nothing discriminatory in the contest and its main aim is to promote Indian culture.
