Night rangers for northern towns
Special Administrator for the Northern Towns Vijay Chand said this is part of the plans for accepting the challenges of keeping the Northern Towns free from crime after declaration of Labasa town crime free yesterday and Savusavu will be declared later today.
According to Chand the position for a ranger existed in both the towns but with new initiative taken by the police, it is now the Council's responsibility to see that a more pro active role was adopted towards reducing crime.
Chand added, the Ranger's role would preliminary be to work hand in hand with police, to keep criminal activities out of town and at the same time enforce our commitments of seeing that the town is litter free.
The Rangers could also patrol areas from where complaints of where excessive noise, abuse of trading hours of billiard and night clubs as well as suspected cases of illegal garbage disposal may be noted.
This he said was in line with the initiative shown by the security forces but all may only be possible without active support from members of the Police Force in Labasa.
Meanwhile Chand said the Council will be initially installing 35 new park and gardens lights in all alleged crime prone areas to see that enough security is provided for people making use of town facilities at night.
Installation of each light may cost as much as $500 each but it is an investment which according to Chand will be treasured by all ratepayers and citizens of Labasa.
