Night Rangers powerless
This is the clarification from Assistant Police Spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri who said that while the Force welcomes assistance from stakeholders, these Rangers will act in a system similar to the Neighborhood watch program, where they will inform police of any illegal operations.
He said that they will not be given any special powers to arrest and prosecute as the Police would not want to endanger the lives of the rangers.
Meanwhile Special Administrator for Savusavu and Labasa Vijay Chand said the rangers however have the power to fine anyone caught littering.
Chand said the initiative was brought up as the towns were declared crime free last week and one of the major problems for the area was littering.
Those caught littering will be fined forty dollars.
Meanwhile, Inspector Sokomuri said that they are currently holding discussions about the matter.
The Labasa Town Council revealed that they will be employing people with clean records, stressing that they will start off with one night Ranger to test the program.
