The National Disaster Management Office conducted a tsunami drill and tested the new tsunami siren at USP in the last hour to assess the reaction time at the university.
Director, Pajiliai Dobui has also apologized to residents and workers in the area who were caught unaware as he said he knows that prior notice should be given.
But at the same time Dobui said people should always be prepared.
Dobui confirmed that USP has funded a siren which is now located at the Lower Campus.
Another siren is located in Lami.
DISMAC is planning to have about eight sirens around the Suva area before setting up the systems in different parts of the country.
A unit costs $28,000.
We stress that there is no tsunami warning.
