New trial date for assassination plot case
DPP Lawyer Narendra Nand informed High Court Judge Justice Paul Madigan that a trial date was initially set by Judge Justice Daniel Gounder, which was later vacated as the parties in the case were awaiting appointments to the bench following the events of April 10th, 2009 when the constitution was abrogated.
He also highlighted that one of the accused, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata is expected to stand trial in a pending matter relating to events of late 2000 and his trial is set for November 2nd this year.
The trial date has now been set for February 1st, 2010.
Ratu Inoke, along with Metuisela Mua, Feoko Gadekibau, Barbadoes Mills, Eperama Waqatairewa, Kamanieli Vosavere and Pauliasi Namulo earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges of allegedly conspiring to assassinate Commodore Bainimarama, former Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and Attorney General Aiyaz Saided Khaiyum.
Meanwhile, there will be a fresh trial for Ratu Inoke Takiveikata after the court ordered a re-trial for the Naitasiri High Chief who was charged in 2001 for allegedly plotting the attempted mutiny at Queen Elizabeth Barracks on November 2nd, 2000. His trial is set for November 2nd, 2009.
