The lives of many pregnant women and their babies are expected to be saved through the commissioning of a new surgery within the Maternity Ward at the CWM Hospital.
At the official ceremony this morning, Interim Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma revealed that CWM alone delivers around 20 babies per day despite the limited staff at the Maternity Ward.
Head of Department Dr James Fong said now they would be able to carry out emergency procedures within the unit without having to cart the expecting mother to the operation theatres across the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Rotary International from Atlanta, USA, also donated $100,000 worth of hygiene packs to the CWMH to be handed out to new mothers and Dr Sharma said this would go some way in reducing the child mortality rate in the country.
