Waking up early and having to walk to school for more than two hours every day will be a thing of the past for close to 90 primary school students in Lavena, Taveuni.

This is after the opening of the new Lavena Primary School in Taveuni earlier this week by the Education Minister Filipe Bole under its Education Disadvantaged Area Program with a capital grant of $152,000.

Ever since education was introduced to the people of Lavena more than 40 years ago, children had to walk for about seven kilometers to reach the nearest primary School located in Bouma, and at times the children had to brave the scorching sun, rain and the dusty road.

Paula Mama of Lavena Village said children and parents are looking forward to the start of the new school term next week, especially with the new school so much closer to home.
