New roadmap to counter Human Trafficking
Director special Unit, SSP Ravi Narayan said that with Fiji being downgraded to Tier Three in the recent US state Government report on Trafficking in Person, it would mean that no assistance from abroad.
According to the US State Report, when a country is downgraded to Tier three, it basically means that the governments do not fully comply with the minimum standards and are not making significant efforts to do so.
Narayan highlighted that a reason for the downgrading were the negative reports by NGOs, highlighting the case where it was reported that young girls in Labasa were selling themselves to make ends meet.
An issue that was also highlighted in the workshop last week, was the fact that Fiji will face opposition with regards to the $1 billion dollar standby loan being sought from the International Monetary Fund.
Commissioner of Police, Commodore Esala Teleni also highlighted in the workshop that human trafficking needed to be addressed as it was a modern form of slavery.
