Die hard rugby fans of Fiji can be rest assured of witnessing an IRB 7s tournament at the National Stadium in a few years time.

The Fiji Rugby Union has given the assurance that it will negotiate with the IRB to bring the series to Fiji as the National Stadium will be ready by next year to host international tournaments.

CEO, Manasa Baravilala confirmed they were also bidding to host the 2016 Junior Rugby World Cup but the focus now is to bring the 7s series.

Meanwhile, Fiji Sports Council CEO, Litiana Loabuka said the rates of the new National Stadium will be higher as they will be providing internationally recognised facilities.

The official commencement of the National Stadium upgrade was announced today by Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Fiji Sports Council has secured a commercial loan of $15 million from ANZ guaranteed with a grant of 3 million dollars annually for the next five years by the Government.

Part of the upgrade will include the extension of the main grandstand with seating around the ground.

Commodore Bainimarama said upon completion, Buckhurst and Bidesi Park will also include three playing grounds, all new changing rooms, a small stadium and a 100 metres artificial training track.

The upgrade will include facilities required to host international facilities such as the changing rooms, masseurs’ area, coach’s room, players lounge, referees room and a media room.

The upgrade will cost $17.5 million.
