A new leader of the Social Democratic Liberal Party or SODELPA will be appointed soon by its new committee.
This is after the election of the party’s management board during the first General Assembly of SODELPA yesterday.
The management board led by its President Ro Teimumu Kepa will appoint a committee who will appoint the party leader.
Former Prime Minister and former party leader, Laisenia Qarase who is a member of SODELPA said appointing a new leader is not an easy task.
SODELPA President Ro Teimumu Kepa acknowledged Qarase’s willingness to be involved as a member of the new party but she said the restriction under the Political Parties Decree makes him ineligible to hold an official position in a party.
She said Qarase remains an icon and a symbol of hope for the democracy.
Qarase cannot be a party official as he was convicted of abuse of office and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.
Other members of the management board include two Vice Presidents Ratu Silivenusi Waqausa and Ratu Lote Yavuca, the Women’s representative is Losena Salabula, and the Youth representative is Ratu Isikeli Komaisavai.
