New laws are expected to be implemented in the new year to ensure that all food items imported into the country do not carry labels and instructions in a foreign language.

Last week, the Ministry of Health issued a directive to all traders and retailers to remove food items with labels in a foreign language from the shelves as consumers are unable to ascertain its ingredients and expiry dates.

Attorney General and Minister for Trade Aiyaz Sayed Khiayum said this issue should have been resolved years ago to restrict the import of food products with labels in a foreign language.
