New born babies record highest numbers of typhoid cases
According to statistics released by the Health Ministry, the average number of confirmed cases of typhoid for this age group is close to 102 out of the national total of 287 cases.
The highest reported cases of typhoid was in the Northern Division with majority cases being reported for new born babies and young children up to 9 years old.
This has resulted in the Health ministry moving their vaccination program North.
Spokesperson, Iliesa Tora said that they are now focusing on showing parents the need to practice hygienic way of preparing food, stressing the need to wash their hands regularly with soap and water.
Looking at the statistics for the North, Labasa recorded 26 cases for the first four months of the year, while Savusavu recorded the highest for May with six cases.
The vaccination campaign has so far seen people in Navosa and in Jittu estate in Suva being vaccinated.
