The Interim Government is expected to provide two new companies with mobile licenses next week.
This has been confirmed by Interim Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who stressed that the awarding of licenses will not mean that these two companies will start operating as soon as the licences are given out.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said they need to protect and recognize the service provided by current license holders and this is why the new companies will not be allowed to operate until late this year.
Meanwhile, the Interim Government and Amalgmated Telecom Holdings Limited yesterday signed a Deed which will see the industry open up for new competitors and increase the competition amongst current operators.
Vodafone Fiji, Telecom Fiji Limited and FINTEL have signed new telecommunication licensing deals and the licenses will be for a 15 year period however, the exclusive licenses which the current carriers hold will end in the next 18 months.
