The Fiji Rugby Union will form a new Colonial Cup franchise only if the funds permit.

FRU Board Chairman Keni Dakuidreketi mentioned at the FRU AGM yesterday that this would involve a lot of paperwork and there has to be a collective agreement on the base Union as this would require a lot of travel.

Dakuidreketi added that island teams wishing to form the new franchise will have to be stable financially.

Meanwhile, the Ovalau Rugby Union had earlier asked if there is a possibility of setting up a new Colonial Cup franchise to cater for island teams in 2008.

Also because most of their players have been taken in by Tailevu, which therefore resulted in the depleting number of players in their base pool and there was less competition in the island zone.
