The interim government has imposed a 20 cents per litre export duty on all mineral water exports and a 20 cents per litre excise duty on mineral water sold locally.

Cabinet has decided to promulgate the changes to the Customs Tarrif Act based on a submission by the Interim Finance Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry.

Chaudhry said the main purpose of this new duty is to stimulate conservation of our scarce natural resources.

He said mineral water resource will deplete and a fair share of returns has to be passed on to the nation.

Chaudhry said this policy will not only address the environmental issues and assist in the monitoring of the depletion of this natural resource, but it will also give a similar treatment to that applicable to other exports such as sugar, molasses and gold.

Natural Waters of Viti Limited is currently trying to get details on the imposition of export and excise duties on mineral water before making a statement.
