All municipal councils can be subject to being fined under the new Litter Promulgation 2008 if they fail to clean up areas which fall under their care.
Director for Environment Epeli Nasome said all councils have days which they allocate for rubbish collection and if they fail to clear the rubbish, they too can be fined under the new Litter Decree.
Nasome said this is to ensure the councils are held accountable for the areas which they look after.
The new Litter Promulgation of 2008 could see a fine of $40 imposed on individuals found littering, and $2000 for cooperate bodies found littering, with even higher penalties for those who refuse to abide by the Litter Promulgation.
