Fiji's new set of coins was today officially unveiled by the Reserve Bank Governor, Savenaca Narube, marking the completion of the Bank's currency review.
Narube said they are changing their coins basically to reduce the cost of minting and handling as these costs continue to increase as demand for cash continues to rise.
The new coins which consist of the $1, 50c, 20c, 10c and 5 cent coins are smaller, lighter and thinner while the designs on the face of the coins remain the same.
The $1, 50c and 10c coins have milled edges, the 20c has interrupted edge and the 5c has a plain edge.
The new coins will be released on January 13th for circulation while the old coins will be withdrawn from circulation on the 31st of March next year.
By 1st April 2009 all old coins will no longer be tendered and only the Reserve Bank will give value for old coins.
