Nazir queried on questioning process
ACP Nazir Ali revealed in court that he came to know of the case to assassinate Bainimarama and others, after he and the Director Special Branch and the Divisional Crime Southern were summoned by the Commissioner on 3rd November 2007 for an urgent meeting.
Ali said they were advised that there was a plot to overthrow the interim government and to remove the President from his office and that certain senior Government officials were to be terminated.
Ali stated that during the briefing they were told to see the senior officer in charge of the Army Intelligence Unit Major Isireli Narawa, who showed them the power point presentation of the alleged meetings that took place between the accused.
Ali was informed by Narawa that there was an undercover officer code named "BICO" within the group, named Lance Corporal Peniasi Kuli.
Ali told the court that at 3.30pm on the 3rd of November he received a call from the Director of the Police Mobile Division that Ballu Khan along with former CRW soldiers were arrested at a checkpoint in Delainavesi.
Defense Counsel Mehboob Raza asked Ali that if he and only a few other senior officers knew of the case, then how was it that the interviewing officers knew what to ask the accused.
Ali in response to this said he had briefed the interviewing officers based on the power point presentation and what the officers asked was entirely up to them.
Raza pointed out that as the charge is for conspiracy to murder, then why was Pacific Connex mentioned during the interview, as it had nothing to do with the case, to which Ali replied that the interviewing officers would have referred to the power point presentation and asked the question.
The case will be called again at 9am on Monday.
