The Native Land Trust Board stresses that all native land is well protected under the laws of Fiji and no further court declaration is necessary to reaffirm this right of indigenous Fijians.
NLTB spokesperson Ro Alipate Mataitini said it is important for indigenous Fijians to know that the Native Lands Act is clear on the ownership of the natives land and how such ownership can be changed only through their representatives in parliament.
His comments come after Suva lawyer Savenaca Komaisavai revealed earlier today that he will now seek a declaration by the courts on the interpretation of the Fijian version of the Deed of Cession to outline that all the native land remains the property of the indigenous Fijians.
Komaisavai claimed that there are concerns that if the court is not asked to make a declaration, indigenous Fijians could end up like the Maori people in New Zealand.
Komaisavai said he is compiling the necessary information before he files the papers in the High Court.
