National Fire Authority takes over Emergency Ambulance Services
The handing over ceremony took place today with the Health Ministry revealing that it had taken two years of hard work to reach this stage.
According to Minister Doctor Neil Sharma, the Government had in May 2008 instructed that a review be done to come up with a way to improve this public service as many people were being deprived.
The Ministry revealed that the outsourcing sees the ambulance services taken away from Saint John’s Ambulance who were contracted to the Health Ministry since 1998 and handed over to the NFA.
Local Government Minister, Col. Samuela Saumatua said that the handling of the emergency service by the firefighters sees Fiji's standards lifted.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive of NFA Jone Koroi said the ones who will benefit the most will be the general public.
The NFA Emergency Service will be tested in the Suva Nausori corridor and will see the three new ambulances based in the Suva, Valelevu and Nausori fire stations.
