With outstanding rates amounting to over $8 million since 2000, Fiji's largest municipal council the Nasinu Town council is now taking steps to try and ensure defaulting rate payers are black listed from acquiring credit from any institution.
Re-appointed Mayor Rajeshwar Kumar told Fijivillage that they have informed the Credit Bureau and the names of defaulting rate payers will also be submitted to various outlets which offer items on higher purchase.
Kumar said they want to recover at least $4 million through the exercise, which had seen many projects remain on hold due to lack of funds within the council.
