Fiji Bati captain Wes Naiqama has been stood down indefinitely by his New Castle Knights club, pending the outcome of a police investigation into an alleged incident at a popular inner city nightspot.

Australian police yesterday confirmed that 26-year-old Naiqama was a "person of interest" in the investigation into the incident at a New Castle hotel on February 1st.

Naiqama who is yet to be interviewed over the incident said he was unaware of a police investigation involving him but would not comment further.

Knights Chief Executive Steve Burraston said he was trying to contact Naiqama last night.

Burraston said the club's disciplinary committee would meet before the end of the week to discuss further sanctions.

Burraston said it was premature to say whether Naiqama faced the sack. Naiqama is one year into a three year contract, reportedly worth $400,000.
