French media have reported that Clermont have agreed to release standout Highlanders wing Waisake Naholo from a two‑year contract he signed before the current Super Rugby season.
It’s a significant result at a time when New Zealand rugby is bleeding plenty of talent to the cashed‑up clubs of the north.
Naholo has been a revelation on the wing for the Highlanders and leads the competition with eight tries from 11 appearances.
Clearly he has also come on to the All Black radar, for New Zealand Rugby was quick to get involved when Naholo indicated he was keen to stay.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders continued their push for a place in the play‑offs with a 45‑24 win against the Cheetahs.
In other matches, Ma’a Nonu’s 50th Super Rugby try helped the Hurricanes to an important 22‑18 victory over the Chiefs, the Brumbies have returned to the top of the Australian conference thanks to a dominant 30‑20 win over the Lions while the Waratahs beat the Sharks 33‑18.
