People in the Western Division are concerned with the tactics now being used by the scrap metal buyers who are allegedly collecting any kind of metal from private properties without even asking the owners.

A Nadi Back Road resident who wishes to remain anonymous told Fijivillage that two to three youths go to houses in a van and take anything with a metal content.

He said the van is parked far away making it difficult for the other residents to see its registration plate.

He said the youths recently went to his compound and walked away with cooking pots while many people have lost many new vehicle spare parts from their garages.

He said the residents are greatly concerned as the youths swear at them when they are asked not to take the items.

He said a youth hit his dog to get into the compound with a large stone breaking its leg.

He is calling on police to patrol the area and arrest the youths involved.

Meanwhile, Assistant Police Spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri has confirmed receiving reports saying a few youths have been arrested and charged.

He said police investigations are still underway.
