The Fiji Prisons and Correction Services has today confirmed that the Naboro Maximum, Medium and Minimum Security Prisons now have CCTV cameras following the recalling of tenders and the issuance of the tender to Safeway Electronics.
It has been confirmed that some issues surfaced in relation to the first contractor and tenders had to be recalled.
According to the Public Accounts Committee report on the 2007 Prisons accounts, Elcom Services Limited was contracted to install CCTV cameras at the Naboro Prisons.
The committee said as at December 2007, the Prisons Department incurred a total of 196 thousand 349 dollars for the purchase and installation of the CCTV.
It said at the time, the project was yet to be completed and during the audit inspection, the technical equipment purchased remained idle at the Central Monitoring Station in Naboro.
The committee said it was then informed that a new contract was awarded to Safeway Electronics to complete the project.
Prisons Department spokesperson, Fred Elbourne said some issues had come up and the Finance Ministry had asked the department to call for tenders again in relation to the project.
Elbourne also said there were some issues in relation to the awarding of the first contract.
However more details could not be obtained.
It cannot be ascertained at this stage on how much funds in total were released to the first and the second contractor.
