The New Zealand women's Sevens team made a strong start to defend their world series crown in Dubai last night.

New Zealand, who also won the World Cup earlier this year, confirmed their top seeding with 3 comfortable wins on the opening day.

They conceded just one try in 3 games, crushing the United States 31 0, Ireland 29 0 and Fiji 33 7.

New Zealand play Brazil in their quarterfinal tonight. 

Meanwhile, the Fijiana 7s team bowed out of the cup competition of the Dubai 7s after losing two pool matches.

The women's team thumped Ireland 38 5 in the first match before going down to USA 24 19 and New Zealand 33 7.

The Digicel Fiji 7s team’s first game is against USA at 8.16 tonight.
