The Digicel Fiji Sevens team went down 14-12 to Samoa in the cup semi-final of the USA Sevens this morning.

Fiji started the match on a high with two tries to Waisea Nayacalevu and captain Setefano Cakau.

The message was clear from assistant coach Etuate Waqa at the half time break that defense is the key in the second half if Fiji wants to proceed to the final.

Samoa started the second half well and got a try with the score 12-7.

Metuisela Talebua then just fell short to score the crucial try in the second half after a kick and chase from the half way mark.

Missed tackles again cost Fiji as Samoa got another try just before the end of the match.

Fiji will now play South Africa at 10am in the third place playoff.

Meanwhile New Zealand beat South Africa 20-7 in the first cup semi-final.

New Zealand will play Samoa at 10.25am in the cup final.
