The leader of a New Zealand Act Party Don Brash said New Zealand should be encouraging the Fiji government’s commitment to racial equality.

Radio New Zealand reports that Dr Brash said he understands Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama wanted to move away from policies favoring I Taukei which fostered racial tension and friction.

Dr Brash said he does not support coups but he said other countries are gaining influence in Fiji as a result of New Zealand policies which have excluded the Fiji government.

Brash also said the content of the Peoples Charter made it obvious that Fiji’s roadmap to democracy is legitimate and it should be supported, saying that it’s exactly the kind of country he wants for New Zealand.
