In an effort to collect more than $22M owed in land rent, the Native Land Trust Board has implemented measures through its Revenue Committee to see that rent is recovered quickly.

NLTB's Public Relations Officer Nimilote Naivalumaira revealed to Fijivillage that traditional methods of collecting rent had failed which resulted in arrears running into the millions.

He added that while they sympathize with tenants blaming the current economic situation Fiji's in, he said that it was not a good enough reason as some arrears had been owing since 2003.

Naivalumaira said that since the inception of the new system of collecting rent, results have been positive because by the end of July, the NLTB had reduced rent arrears owed by 24% from $22M to $16.8M.

The Revenue Committee which oversees the collection of arrears is chaired by the Deputy General Manager of Operations Meli Benuci.
