The National Fire Authority will now charge companies a fee for attending incidents such as spillage of diesel, fuel or oil on land, rivers and waterways.

Chief Fire Officer Tupou Saubulinayau said the fuel spill incident last week in Nabua could have caused a major road accident and it would only have taken a cigarette butt or a lit match stick thrown on the road at that point in time, to ignite the fuel and cause a major catastrophe that morning.

He said such incidences can occur anytime and those companies liable for the spillage of diesel, fuel, oil, gas or hazardous material will have to reimburse the cost incurred by NFA during the cleaning up process to these incidences either in land or on the waterways.

He said oil spills on land, sea and rivers can have severe impacts and long-term consequences on the environment.
