NFA rescues 44 people in Labasa
The Firefighters rescued 44 people in the Korowiri area, Nacula village and Wasavolu village in Labasa as these areas are situated right next to the river.
Divisional Fire Officer Northern, John Pillay said the homes were located in the low lying areas and were in danger.
Pillay has raised concerns that despite several warnings, people did not take heed of it.
The people have been evacuated to Gurunanak College which is located near Labasa Town and has been set up as an evacuation centre for those in towns and nearby areas.
He said the water level in the Labasa River is rising at a dramatic rate and the river is expected to break its bank anytime.
The NFA is also advising the people in Labasa, Savusavu and Tavueni to call their emergency line on 911 or Divisional Fire Officer Northern John Pillay on 9987503 for rescue assistance.
