The National Fire Authority is hoping for an incident free Diwali festival this year.
With Diwali to be celebrated this Saturday, acting divisional fire officer Tupou Saubulinayau has urged parents to monitor their children while they are playing with fire crackers and using matches.
He said fire incidents during Diwali have been mainly due to carelessness when parents do not supervise their kids when they are playing with fire crackers, matches or not properly placing candles and prayer diyas.
He added that some of the safety measures during Diwali that people can take is to use decorative lights that have an approved standard label and follow the instructions to set up and operate, candles and diyas should be used in a safe position away from flammable materials and to switch off all electrical displays and decorative lights before going to bed.
