There have been a total of 11 commercial property fires and 168 structural fires so far this year.

These statistics were revealed by Local Government and Urban Development Minister Colonel Samuela Saumatua who officially opened the National Fire Authority 2011 Strategic Business Plan workshop.

Colonel Saumatua said these fires directly affected over 100 people through the closure of their business and even meant job losses for some.

He also said that direct fire losses per year in Fiji, if valued runs into millions of dollars and Fiji cannot afford this.

Colonel Saumatua said the authority needs to make plans to move in the right direction not only to complement Government’s expectations but also to ensure that the close to 300 human resources of the NFA are well utilized.

He also said effective monitoring tools such as work plans and a performance measurement system will need to be implemented to monitor the performance of the Authority.

The Workshop continues today.
