NFA calls on caution after 69 grass fires
Acting Divisional Fire Officer, Timoci Ranavue revealed that apart from the 69 grass fires, their fire firefighters in Nadi have been struggling with grass fires on a daily basis.
Late yesterday afternoon, Ranavue revealed that their officers managed to contain a grass fire in Meqania in Nadi, that if undetected would have spread to a vacant house less than 6 meters away.
According to NFA, the grass fires are started from carelessness of people by throwing cigarette butts and in some cases people burning household rubbish and leave the fire unattended.
Early yesterday in Nadi at 8.15am, firefighters fought with a blaze that saw the Trade Furniture and Joinery Company Limited along the Nadi Back road completely destroyed.
Firefighters managed to put the blaze out and stopped it from spreading to the Timber Yard and the next Warehouse which was meters away from the fire scene.
The concrete and wooden structure double storey building was completely destroyed by fire.
The Authority stressed that while they are battling with the dry and windy weather conditions, early calls would save homes and businesses. Investigations are underway at the moment to determine the cause of the fire.
