The home fire which claimed the life of a man in his late 50s yesterday morning is the third home fire this year, apart from the bus fire, compared to eight last year.

This has been confirmed by National Fire Chief Mark Reid who said as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding this tragic fire, it is a timely and tragic reminder that a fire can easily start in the home.

Reid said National Fire Safety Week is targeting home fire safety and teams will be visiting many schools, communities and individual homes throughout the country over the next week providing education and tips about preventing fires starting within the home.

With the theme for National Fire Safety Week being “Keep Your Home Fire Safe - It's Your Job”, the National Fire Authority urges citizens to take responsibility for their own safety in their homes.
