Hypertension, Smoking, Alcohol consumption and even Kava drinking if not checked could be the leading causes of deaths for people aged 12 years and over.

This is what the Ministry of Health along with the National Nutrition Centre are saying following a national survey report highlighting the lack of emphasis placed on a person’s health.

According to the report, High Blood Pressure is the leading number one risk a person will be at in getting a non communicable disease such as stroke or diabetes, with smoking as the 4th factor.

In 1998 it was estimated that NCDs cost Fiji a total of 1.55 of the GDP and 11% of the National Health Budget.

This had been met with concern by former chairperson of the third national nutrition survey Taskforce, Doctor Margaret Cornelius who said if people are not careful this could eventually lead to their death.
