Fiji has to move away from appointing people that you know, to merit based appointments to ensure that the best person gets the job.

While speaking during the Attorney General's Conference on the topic of Public Office Accountability, Chief Justice Anthony Gates said for Judicial Department vacancies they have a form which applicants have to fill out and declaration must be made as to the existence of any person in the department to whom the applicant is related to by blood or marriage.

Chief Justice Gates said while this does not mean that you won't get the job, it is only right to know whether the applicant is related to anyone in the department.
