The three assessors in the trial against 21 year old Maria Tawake who was charged with the murder of her new born bay have found her guilty of infanticide.

After deliberating behind closed doors the three assessors came back with a split decision on the murder charge.

Two of the assessors found Tawake not guilty of murder while one of the assessors found her guilty of murder.

But all three were unanimous in their decision to find Tawake guilty of infanticide.

High Court Judge Justice Priyantha Fernando then ordered the two counsels to make submissions on sentencing and mitigation before the case is recalled on the 23rd of this month.

Tawake's fate will also be known on the same day.

Tawake was charged with murder after she gave birth in the restroom at the CWM's Labour Ward and left the baby in the rubbish bin before leaving the hospital.
