Police are now looking for the mother of a new-born baby boy after she is alleged to have packed him in a carton and dropped him off on the roadside in Vatuwaqa, Suva.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said that a taxi driver, who was driving along Rifle Range in Vatuwaqa last night, heard a baby crying from a carton and decided to check on where the noise was coming from.
Police are pleading with the mother to please contact the nearest Police station so the small baby is returned because he is only a few days old and needs a mother's tender care.
Meanwhile, the new Crime Decree 2009 shows that any woman who after giving birth secretly disposes a child, during birth or after, will be sent to prison for one year.
Police are also asking the public if you know or saw someone dropping the child off to please contact the nearest police station.
Meanwhile, two people are now in hospital after the vehicle they were travelling in developed mechanical problems and they jumped out of the vehicle.
Polise spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri says the vehicle that was driven by a 29-year old woman of Lami, was travelling towards Nausori, when in Nabua the vehicle developed problems.
The driver informed the two who decided to jump out and sustained injuries and is now admitted at the CWM Hospital.
Police have questioned and released the driver.
