Fifty three lives have been lost as a result of drowning so far this year.
 
In a latest incident a 17 year old teenager died yesterday morning after he was swept away by strong currents at the Wainibuku river in Narere.

Police confirm the body is now at the CWM Hospital awaiting post mortem.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Police Force Water Safety Council statistics reveal that 241 lives have been lost due to drowning in the last four years.

According to a report by the Steering Committee member, Bronwyn Soko, highest number of drowning cases was recorded in rivers.

In the last four years 86 deaths occurred in rivers while 68 drowning cases occurred at sea.

A father is in a state of shock today as his 17 year old son died this morning after he was swept away by strong currents at the Wainibuku River in Narere.

The Father Bijay Kumar Raju who was trying hard to compose himself told Fijivillage this afternoon that his son had told his grandfather that he was going for a swim with his friends at around ten this morning and did not return.

He said his son was a bright boy and was preparing for his sixth form external examinations and the family is grieving and is still coming to terms with the loss of the youngest member of the family.

Raju said that they have yet to decide on the funeral date.
